South Cadbury Village is situated in South Somerset, just off the A303 near the villages of North Cadbury of Sutton Montis and the market towns of Castle Cary and Wincanton and is famous as the location of the historic Hill Fort of Cadbury Castle thought by many to be the site of King Arthur’s Camelot.
The village is easily accessed from the A303. The parish church St Thomas a Becket dates from the 13th century. It was restored in 1874 but still boasts a 15th century roof.
Cadbury Castle is a vast Iron Age fort and the entrance is less than a three minute walk away. The castle is also part of a working farm so you can expect livestock to be grazing on the top or in the woods and fields around it. From the top you can see Alfred’s Tower, Glastonbury Tor and Yeovilton airbase. Excavations in the 1960s revealed artifacts from human occupation and use from the Neolithic through the Bronze and Iron Ages. The site was used by Roman forces and temporarily housed a Saxon mint.
